John D’s Has Moved!
John D’s Computer Services is proud to announce that we will now be servicing the southwestern portion of Ohio. In particular, we are now located in Hamilton, Ohio, which is about 9 miles north of I-275.
We will gladly refer existing customers in the Cleveland area to a company we’ve partnered with for a limited time. Our old phone number still works, so phone or fill out a service request, and we will gladly assist you during this transition period.
Of course, a lot of things can be done remotely, so we are willing to still offer low rates for software configuration, PC tune-ups, and other items that can be done remotely.
John D assures you that he will miss northeast Ohio, as he has called it home for 17 years. He is grateful for all of the great people he’s met in those years.
However, he is looking forward to being able to provide value & convenience to an entirely new set of customers!
John D’s Online Store Is Moving/Expanding
Looking for a great deal? Who isn’t?
I occasionally get parts that I can use to refurbish computers or resell from upgraded machines and the like, but it honestly isn’t my main line of income, nor do I intend it to be. However, I put up the online store with the thought in mind that I can offer deals for people who might need the parts (and avoid filling up the landfill as well). The problem is that it is that it was put up without any real system in place to provide a real service. My inventory is intentionally small, but how do you move such a small inventory?
I found that: 1) I was spending an inordinate amount of time doing inventory instead of things I really wanted to do, and 2) A significant amount of my time is spent looking for deals on parts I don’t have for customers when they have a need. Who was benefiting? Not me. Not the customer. There had to be a better way, and it had to be useful to other people outside of the company.
John D’s Closed for Festival of Unleavened Bread
John D’s will be closed today in order to observe the First Day of Unleavened Bread. We will be open tomorrow.
Important AVG Notice: BSOD After Update 3292
I got an email today in reference to AVG on 64 bit Windows 7 possibly causing the blue screen of death (BSOD). A patch has been put out for this. In addition, AVG is offering free support for 48 hours if someone is afflicted with this problem.
You can read more about this problem under FAQ 4079 and how to fix it at the AVG website.
Now Offering Custom Built PCs
This is a multi-purpose article.
First off, it is to showcase one of our custom built multimedia machines. It is a Home Theater PC (HTPC). Built with Antec and ASUS components, it contains a TV tuner, 640GB Western Digital 7200RPM hard drive, 4GB DDR3 RAM, 2 Blu Ray burners, Iomega Zip drive and runs 64-bit Windows 7 Professional.
Second, this video is a way to test out video editing software. As I wrote yesterday, I used CyberLink PowerDirector. I will write more about this tomorrow.
John D’s Is Closed
John D’s Computer Services is going into annual shutdown mode today. That means no blog articles until the 4th of October.
Until then, practice safe computing and be careful out there. ;->
John D’s Closed Today
Today is the Feast of Trumpets, or Zicaron Terua. John D’s will be closed today in its observance. See you tomorrow!
Happy Labor Day; Moderation Is On
I hope everyone is enjoying their Labor Day. Unfortunately, I’m using mine to clean up spam and do other indoor things. However, I got to spend yesterday outdoors (and there was more sun as well).
Well, since some spammers think I’m asleep at the wheel on a long weekend, and since it might become a bigger issue in the future, I’ve turned on moderation for comments. In practical terms, that means I have to approve comments, and so it will take longer for them to show up. Exactly how long depends upon how long it is before I’m notified, what I’m doing at the moment and how connected I am at the moment.
I apologize for this, but I run a quality blog here. I want it to stay that way.
I feel I have to state upfront that it isn’t a matter of agreeing with me (if you are on my other, bigger blog, then it is obvious that I approve comments even when they disagree with me). Different points of view make for healthier discussion. In fact, people sometimes email me with suggestions, and I don’t disregard them either.
I don’t want to discourage legitimate comments, but if all you want to do is promote your website/blog and/or make meaningless and irrelevant comments, then I do want to discourage you from commenting. Self-promotion is not what I’m fighting as long as it is relevant to the discussion at hand. If you cannot add anything to the discussion but just want to provide links to your site, then go away.
Revamp For Reuse, Refurbish or Recycle Charges
After going over the charges for the Re-Re-Re Program (Re-use, Re-furbish or Re-cycle), it was evident that they didn’t make a lot of sense.
Why charge at all for the service? Because Gas isn’t cheap! So, did it make sense to charge different prices for different items? No! Did it make sense to charge the transportation fee on top of the charge to haul it away? No!
So, the only thing that made any sense at all was to charge for distance plus perhaps some for labor. In either case, the difference between picking up one small items or 20 large ones didn’t make much of a difference time-wise.
Therefore, starting immediately, prices for picking up used and unwanted computer equipment will be based upon location. See our main web site’s zone map for details about the zones. It will shortly be updated with the following information about the Re-Re-Re program:
Zone 0: $5.00
Zone 1: $10.00
Zone 2: $15.00
There are no additional labor charges. As long as the equipment fits safely into our company SUV, that is the charge for each trip.
Like I say, Value and Convenience.
