Have a Happy and Safe Independence Day!

This weekend is a long weekend for many, and I’m going to take off some additional time as well.  It is important to be able to recharge your batteries upon occasion.

It is summer, so I hope you will be spending time with family, friends or both.  If so, count yourself blessed.  If you are able to eat lots of goodies off the grill, count yourself blessed.  If you can pop a cold one, please don’t overdo it and definitely do not drive, but do count yourself blessed.

FWIW, the US is not perfect by any means, but it still is the most blessed nation on God’s earth.  That should not be taken for granted.  Remember to take some time out for all these blessings and for the blessing of people who were willing to give up life and limb for liberty.  Be thankful, because blessings are undeserved and can disappear in at a moment’s notice.  Just ask those who have had to deal with earthquakes, drought, floods and tornadoes of late.

Just as important, though, I am going to take an additional step to ask you a question: What are you doing with your freedom?  I hope that sometime during this weekend you will ask this question and ponder if the answer sits well with you or not.  Are you using your blessings to help and bless others, or are you creating an island and hoarding those blessings for yourself?  If you are helping others, then maybe there is a better way.  If not, then maybe it’s time to really take an inventory of your life.

Please be safe.  Drinking and driving don’t mix, but neither do fireworks and firewater, if you know what I mean.

Happy Labor Day; Moderation Is On

I hope everyone is enjoying their Labor Day.  Unfortunately, I’m using mine to clean up spam and do other indoor things.  However, I got to spend yesterday outdoors (and there was more sun as well).

Well, since some spammers think I’m asleep at the wheel on a long weekend, and since it might become a bigger issue in the future, I’ve turned on moderation for comments.  In practical terms, that means I have to approve comments, and so it will take longer for them to show up.  Exactly how long depends upon how long it is before I’m notified, what I’m doing at the moment and how connected I am at the moment.

I apologize for this, but I run a quality blog here.  I want it to stay that way.

I feel I have to state upfront that it isn’t a matter of agreeing with me (if you are on my other, bigger blog, then it is obvious that I approve comments even when they disagree with me).  Different points of view make for healthier discussion.  In fact, people sometimes email me with suggestions, and I don’t disregard them either.

I don’t want to discourage legitimate comments, but if all you want to do is promote your website/blog and/or make meaningless and irrelevant comments, then I do want to discourage you from commenting.  Self-promotion is not what I’m fighting as long as it is relevant to the discussion at hand.  If you cannot add anything to the discussion but just want to provide links to your site, then go away.

Cell Phone Updates

I have several updates about the whole cell phone, wifi calling and mobile network issue.

For now, I’ve moved to AT&T because the iPhone will do voip over wifi using Skype (at least for now).  As a bonus, it will also work over 3G, and it’s actually acceptable, at least most of the time.

So, I will be doing a review of the iPhone 3GS soon.  The iPhone 4 was a little out of my expected price range, but I understand that iOS4 levels the field somewhat.  It has taken me over 24 hours just to learn the basics, but I hope to get something up on it no later than Monday.

Also, I will be updating the article on “T-Mobile Lies and Scams”, as I need to let you know how that is working out as well.  While I’m still miffed, T-Mobile has been reasonable about returning the BB Bold, so keep your eye out for updates there!

Have a Good Weekend

This was posted ahead of time.  Due to a death in the family, there will be no regular blog article today.  Blessings upon you all this weekend.  Hug a loved one today.

blog.johndscomputers.com Now Open!

OK, after a few mishaps, http://blog.johndscomputers.com is now working. Thanks again for your patience. Next, I will setup a redirect for http://blog.jdcnservices.com this weekend to point to it as well.

BTW, the old URL http://jdcnservices.blogspot.com will still work too!

Domain Name Update

Well, I found a mistake in how I set up one of the redirects for the blog domain name, so ended up fixing a lot more than I had bargained for.

I got it working once, sort of.  I really wanted blog.johndscomputers.com to be the main URL, but I got it working by redirecting it to blog.jdcnservices.com.  At any rate, now all the name servers are pointing that way, so I’ve reverted back for now.  I’m going to give everything enough time to clear out and try again later.

Some of this will require experimentation because even though the concept is the same no matter where you are hosted, the tools are different.  So, reading the instructions for another hosted company only helps a little bit.  It’s sort of like a Microsoft Word user trying to tell a WordPerfect user how to do a spell check.

Again, thank you for your patience.

Step One Blog Domain Name Transition Complete

I’ve spoken before about creating a subdomain that is more user-friendly for the web address (aka, URL) for the blog while still maintaining the blogspot.com address.  I would like you to know that step 1 is complete!

At any rate, it was a fairly simple procedure, but it meant a lot of typing.  So, I have to wait 48 hours to make sure it “took” and I didn’t make any typos.  If I did, I’ll be reverting stuff back quickly as soon as I find out something is foobar.

Otherwise, on Sunday I will create both “blog.jdcnservices.com” and “blog.johndscomputers.com”, and hopefully both will point to the right place.

Thanks for understanding.

Slight Name Changes

At John D’s, we are always looking for ways to get the word out about offering value and convenience!  One small change we can do to help get the word out is to make it easier to remember.

So, here is an overview of the changes:

  1. John D’s Computer & Network Services will be shortened to John D’s Computer Services.
  2. The blog will now be called John D’s Computer Blog.
  3. The name John D’s Computer & Network Services will be retained for backward compatibility.

Here is a short FAQ about the name:

Q. Why are you making these changes?

A. To better reflect our focus and enable people to remember it better.  The shorter name is easier to make out checks to as well. :)

Q. When are you making these changes?

A. We’ve already started.  Some changes will be phased in, but we’ve already started making changes.

Q. Why are you dropping “Network”?  Are you not doing networking any longer?

A. We haven’t stopped doing networks for home offices and small businesses.  In a very real sense, computers and networking aren’t easily separated, nor do we believe they should be.

The original name caused more confusion than it solved.  It was good for web searches, but people often asked if we did networking as well in spite of it being in the name because it was towards the end of long name.  Others asked if we did Cisco routers and such.  Since our focus is on small businesses, and not enterprises, we don’t deal with WAN or Internet routers.

Most people assume computers will be on a network anyhow, so taking it out of the name better positions us for small businesses and home office users who have local area networks and wireless LAN setups.

Q. Will you change the website address?

A. We have already added URLs for www.johndscomputers.com and www.johndscomputerservices.com to the existing site.  There are no plans at this time to do away with www.jdcnservices.com, but we will review this on a regular basis.

Q. What about the blog?  Will it stay where it is?

A. At some point, we hope to change it to blog.johndscomputers.com.  We will make announcements ahead of time, but the old address should still work afterwards.

Snow Day

OK, I’ve spent more the past 48 hours shovelling snow than writing, so I’m declaring today a snow day. :)

See you tomorrow.

Need a Blogroll

I guess I need a blogroll. I seemed to have failed to put one up thus far, and I apologize for that. Here are my nominations:
