Geek Friday: Help Google Index Website Using Google XML Sitemaps WordPress Plugin

“If you build it, they will come” sounds nice in the movies, but it doesn’t reflect real life very well.  It’s the same in the virtual world.  If you have the greatest site but no one knows it exists, then what good is it?  That’s why a webmaster needs to do as much as reasonably possible to get noticed by the search engines.

Google Webmaster Tools allows you to submit a sitemap to Google, which will mean faster indexing.  However, it can be a manual and tedious process.  The XML file needs to be updated periodically, or the data will grow stale eventually.

If you have a WordPress site, this can be done automatically for you.  Google XML Sitemaps is a plugin that will regularly update the XML.

This plugin will generate a special XML sitemap which will help search engines like Google, Bing, Yahoo and Ask.com to better index your blog. With such a sitemap, it’s much easier for the crawlers to see the complete structure of your site and retrieve it more efficiently.

The only downside I’m aware of is that it doesn’t work on multisite enabled sites.
